Watches are small portable timepieces
usually worn around the wrist or carried in a pocket. There
is a discrepancy over when and where the first watch was
created since many believe it was in Nuremberg, Germany
early in the 16th century, while others firmly claim that
watches had been made in Italy before then. Wherever watches
originated, the high-tech gadgets that most people now wear
have come a long way.
Wrist watches became elegantly fashionable among women
during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Men,
however, very seldom wore them thinking of them as too
effeminate and continued to rely on their pocket watches. It
was only during World War I that large numbers of men began
to wear watches around their wrists.
Soldiers in battle soon found wrist watches to be highly
valuable for timing of precision movements. Technological
improvements were made on watches to provide more accuracy
and durability which greatly increased their value and their
appeal. As the demand for watches increased, so did the
number of manufacturers.
Today, your watch does much more than just tell time. It can
do about anything from recording the time to recording your
voice. There are now mechanical, automatic and digital
watches from which to choose. And prices vary accordingly.
